Step 1: Read the job description like a checklist

Copy the job description into a document and highlight three things:

• Hard skills and tools — specific technologies, certifications, methods, or software ("SQL", "Salesforce", "GAAP", "React").

• Repeated words — anything mentioned more than once is a priority. Note it.

Step 5: Mirror keywords without stuffing

The ATS rewards relevant keywords but penalizes obvious gaming. Weave terms into real accomplishments rather than dumping a keyword list. If the role wants "data analysis," a bullet like "Ran weekly data analysis in SQL to flag $200K in billing errors" beats a skills-section keyword with no context.

Step 6: Do a final match check

Before you submit, compare your resume against the posting one more time. Ask:

1. Would someone see the top 3 required skills in the first third of the page?
2. Does the summary name the exact role you're applying to?
3. Is anything on here irrelevant to this job? Cut it.
