Most resume rejections aren't about a lack of talent — they're about small, fixable mistakes that make a recruiter move on. Here are the eleven that come up most often, and how to fix each in a few minutes.
1. One generic resume for every job
The biggest one. A resume that isn't tailored to the specific role reads as a mismatch to both the ATS and the recruiter. Fix: customize the summary, skills, and top bullets for each posting using the job description's own language.
2. Responsibilities instead of results
"Responsible for managing social media accounts" tells the reader nothing. Fix: rewrite as an outcome — "Grew Instagram following 3x to 45K in 8 months, driving 20% of inbound leads."
3. No numbers
Vague claims are forgettable and unverifiable. Fix: quantify wherever you can — revenue, percentages, time saved, team size, volume handled. Numbers are what recruiters actually remember.
4. Weak, repetitive verbs
Starting every bullet with "Worked on" or "Helped with" reads passive. Fix: lead with strong action verbs — led, built, launched, cut, negotiated, automated, scaled.
5. A summary that says nothing
"Hardworking professional seeking a challenging opportunity" is filler. Fix: write a two-line summary naming your role, your specialty, and your biggest proof point: "Product marketer with 6 years in B2B SaaS; launched 3 products that drove $4M in new ARR."
6. Burying the relevant experience
Recruiters skim top-down and rarely reach the bottom. Fix: put your most relevant role and strongest bullets first, and trim older or off-target experience.
7. Too long — or padded to fill space
Two pages of thin content is worse than one strong page. Fix: cut anything that doesn't support this application. Early-career? One page. Extensive senior experience? Two, max.
8. Typos and inconsistent formatting
Mismatched fonts, uneven spacing, and typos signal carelessness. Fix: proofread out loud, and keep dates, tenses, and bullet styles perfectly consistent.
9. An ATS-hostile design
Multi-column layouts, text in images, and fancy graphics often fail to parse — so a searching recruiter never finds you. Fix: use a clean, single-column, ATS-tested template.
10. Missing keywords from the job description
If the role wants "financial modeling" and that phrase appears nowhere on your resume, you may be filtered out. Fix: mirror the exact skills and titles from the posting, where they're true for you.
11. An unprofessional or missing contact line
An old email address, no LinkedIn, or a missing phone number adds friction. Fix: use a clean professional email, and include your LinkedIn and location (city/region is enough).
